WHAT EXPERTS SAY ABOUT GREEN INVESTING AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Larry Fink - CEO Blackrock
“Over time, companies and countries that do not respond to stakeholders and address sustainability risks will encounter growing skepticism from the markets, and in turn, a higher cost of capital. Companies and countries that champion transparency and demonstrate their responsiveness to stakeholders, by contrast, will attract investment more effectively, including higher-quality, more patient capital.”
This quote is only a small excerpt from an entire letter the CEO penned in 2020. The letter details what Mr. Fink sees in the future for markets as they adapt to new regulations, and why sustainability will begin to play a very crucial role in the portfolio of the average investor.
Warren Buffett - CEO Berkshire Hathaway
“It seems highly likely to me that climate change poses a major problem for the planet,” he wrote. “I say ‘highly likely’ rather than ‘certain’ because I have no scientific aptitude and remember well the dire predictions of most ‘experts’ about Y2K. It would be foolish, however, for me or anyone to demand 100% proof of huge forthcoming damage to the world if that outcome seemed at all possible and if prompt action had even a small chance of thwarting the danger.”
“Call this Noah’s Law. If an ark may be essential for survival, begin building it today, no matter how cloudless the skies appear.”
Mr. Buffets outlook has been described as somewhat cold-blooded. While he shares concern over the future state of the planet, his view is much more along the likes of making money whatever may come, than doing anything about it.
Bill Ackman
“(activism) has materially shifted the balance of power,”
George Soros
“There is no magic bullet for climate change, but there is a lethal bullet: coal.”
Ray Dalio
“At minimum, climate change is going to be an expensive disruptor; at a maximum it will be much worse. It will have the effect of changing areas that were once productive and diminishing them, particularly in agricultural production. It will bring about sea level changes that will impact infrastructure spending. It will create larger and more frequent storms that will lead to greater damage. It will also affect migration and where people will want to live. It could be worse than that. I think it will lead to technological changes that will be focused on how to deal with it effectively. I don’t yet know what these will look like.”
Peter Thiel
"I'm not sure I'm an extreme skeptic of climate change, but I have my doubts about the extreme ways that people try to push it through. Even if climate change is quite as bad as people think it is, if we [fall prey to] groupthink, we're more likely to misdiagnose the problem. Maybe it's methane emissions, and the real problem is eating steak"
Jamie Dimon
“Climate is a serious issue,” he said. “But even if you don’t believe it all, sitting here as a human being, as a risk manager, why take a chance on a catastrophic outcome? And there are potential catastrophic outcomes. Most of Florida will be gone in 30 years.”
