The Smell That Saves

Most of us know what a natural gas leak smells like. It is one of those odors that immediately gets your attention, and for good reason. If you have ever caught even a faint hint of that rotten-egg smell near a stove or furnace, you probably did not need to think very long about what it might mean.

What is interesting is that natural gas does not naturally smell that way. In its untreated form, it is essentially odorless. The smell is added on purpose, which raises an obvious question: why?

The answer goes back to East Texas in the 1930s.

At the time, the area around New London, Texas, was in the middle of an oil boom. While much of the country was still struggling through the Great Depression, oil money had transformed the local economy. The school district was especially well funded, and its school was considered one of the more modern and impressive facilities in the region.

Despite that prosperity, school officials were still interested in cutting costs where they could. That is not especially surprising. Wealthy organizations do it, profitable businesses do it, and most of us do the same thing in our own lives. If there is a way to get essentially the same thing for less money, it usually seems worth considering.

The school had been purchasing natural gas to heat the building, but nearby oil production created another source. Residue gas, a byproduct of the drilling process, was readily available in the area, and using it had become common enough that it likely did not seem unusual. The school stopped buying commercial natural gas and connected to a nearby residue-gas line instead.

The decision saved money. It also removed something nobody at the time fully appreciated.

The gas had no odor.

At some point, a connection began leaking, and the gas slowly accumulated in an enclosed area beneath the school. Because there was no smell, there was no obvious indication that anything was wrong. On the afternoon of March 18, 1937, a spark ignited the gas, causing an explosion that destroyed much of the building and resulted in a tremendous loss of life.

There is no reason to linger on the details of what happened next. The important part of the story, at least for our purposes, is what people learned from it.

Investigators determined that the leaking gas had accumulated without anyone realizing it was there. Within a matter of weeks, Texas moved to require that natural gas be odorized so that leaks could be detected before they became dangerous. Over time, the practice became widespread.

That is why natural gas smells the way it does today.

I find that interesting because the odor itself contributes nothing to the usefulness of the gas. It does not make your furnace heat the house any better. It does not make your stove cook more efficiently. It does not lower your bill. In normal circumstances, it serves no purpose at all.

Its only job is to let you know when something is wrong.

There are a lot of things in our financial lives that work in much the same way. They can look unnecessary when everything is going well, and sometimes they even appear inefficient. An emergency reserve may sit in cash for years without being touched. Insurance premiums may be paid month after month for protection you hope never to use. A little extra room in a budget may seem like money that could be put to better use somewhere else.

When nothing bad is happening, it is easy to look at those things and wonder whether they are really necessary.

That is one of the problems with safeguards. When they are doing their job, they often look like wasted capacity.

A smoke detector spends nearly all of its life sitting quietly on the ceiling. A seat belt is unnecessary on almost every drive you will ever take. The added odor in natural gas is irrelevant every day that your appliances and gas lines are working properly. None of those things prove their value under normal conditions.

Their value becomes obvious only when normal conditions disappear.

I think that is where the temptation to over-optimize can get us into trouble. We naturally like efficiency. We want less waste, lower costs, and fewer dollars sitting around doing nothing. In many cases, those are perfectly reasonable goals. But there is a point where removing inefficiency also means removing resilience.

The New London school was not trying to be reckless. It was trying to save money. That distinction matters because most bad financial decisions do not announce themselves as bad financial decisions when we make them. They usually begin with a perfectly understandable goal: save a little more, earn a little more, spend a little less, or make the whole system run more efficiently.

The problem comes when we fail to recognize what we may be giving up in exchange.

There is no universal answer for how much cash someone should keep, how much insurance is enough, or how much margin a financial plan should have. Too much protection can create its own costs. But a plan that only works when nothing unexpected happens is probably not much of a plan either.

Sometimes the money sitting in reserve really does have a job, even if that job is hard to see. Sometimes the premium you hope never pays a claim is buying something useful. Sometimes a little extra room between what you earn and what you spend is not wasted money at all.

It is simply a warning system, or a margin of safety, waiting quietly in the background.

Most of us will never think about why natural gas smells the way it does. We simply know that if we smell it, we should pay attention.

There is probably a useful lesson in that. Some of the best safeguards in our lives are the ones we barely notice, right up until the moment we are very glad they are there.
